Different, Not Deficient

It makes me angry that acknowledging a mental health diagnosis and receiving help is still a source of stigma and shame.  I am grateful to the brave and clever people who have taken to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, not to mention those who have started podcasts, to normalize mental health conditions by dropping their masks and sharing their struggles. They have done more to raise awareness and spread hope in the last few years than the psychiatric community has been able to do in decades.

In today’s solo episode,  I’d like to share with you my thoughts about being a person with ADHD and what those four little letters mean to me.  ADHD is a mouthful if you spell it out.  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  Not only is the clinical label confusing because people with ADHD can and do pay attention, and many of us aren’t hyperactive, but the words “deficit” and “disorder” are triggering enough to stop many from ever scheduling a diagnostic appointment.

If you suspect or know you have ADHD, you don’t have to pledge allegiance to any of the factions within this community (‘It’s a superpower!” vs “It’s a disability!”) but you do need to decide what you make it mean about you, your life and your abilities.  Listen in as I share my journey with ADHD and the choices I have made that just might work for you too.
